Ozwater'26 Plenary Day 1 Keynote: Cameron Costello

This plenary keynote explores the deep cultural, spiritual and ecological significance of water through a Quandamooka and broader First Nations perspective. Cameron Costello reflects on water as living Country: inseparable from identity, culture, law, ceremony, community wellbeing and responsibilities to future generations.

Drawing on Quandamooka experiences, native title, joint management and caring for Country initiatives, the presentation highlights the value of Indigenous knowledge in understanding seasonal cycles, wetlands, groundwater, fisheries, climate impacts and the connections between freshwater, saltwater and surrounding ecosystems. It also considers the importance of First Nations participation in water governance, access to natural resources, free, prior and informed consent, and place-based approaches to decision-making.

Looking towards the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Costello challenges the water sector to pursue a lasting legacy through genuine co-design, stronger recognition of First Nations rights, water restoration projects, research, innovation and Indigenous leadership. The session calls for collaboration that respects the past while creating healthier waterways, stronger communities and better outcomes for generations to come.
